A woman died after she was struck by multiple vehicles along Coast Highway in Laguna Beach on Sunday, Feb. 5, authorities said. Her death marked the second fatal collision on the road in Laguna Beach in recent weeks.
At about 6 p.m., the woman was crossing the road near the 30600 block of South Coast Highway, south of Nyes Place, when she was struck several times by oncoming traffic in southbound lanes, according to the Laguna Beach Police Department. She was not in a crosswalk when she was struck.
The woman was taken to a hospital where she died from her injuries, authorities said.
Her identity was immediately released by authorities.
The drivers involved in the crash stayed at the scene and drugs or alcohol were not believed to have been involved.
On Jan. 28, a 39-year-old man was fatally struck in the 700 block of Coast Highway, near St Ann’s Drive. The driver in that crash stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
“Coast Highway is owned and operated by Caltrans and we will reach out to them to determine if they can implement additional safety improvements to make the roadway safer for pedestrians,” Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whalen said in a statement. “We need to hold Caltrans accountable to find safety solutions to avoid more tragic accidents in our City.”
All southbound lanes on Coast Highway from Nyes Place to Laguna Terrace remained closed Sunday evening while authorities continued their investigation. The second northbound lane was open.
Anyone with information regarding the collision was urged to contact the Laguna Beach Police Department at 949-497-0701.
