A 30-year-old Rosemead woman died when her car careened into a lake at the Woodbridge housing development in Irvine on Thanksgiving Day, police said.
Irvine police are still investigating why the woman’s car sped into North Lake without stopping at around 10 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 23.
A witness saw the driver traveling southbound on Yale Avenue toward Irvine Center Drive at around that time, said Sgt. Karie Davies, an Irvine police spokeswoman.
“The driver didn’t stop or brake,” Davies said. “She just continued on into the lake.”
Firefighters called to the lake were forced to use a swift-water rescue team and a helicopter to locate the car and recover the woman’s body, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.
Davies said police did not know yet whether the woman was on drugs or alcohol, or sleeping, or was unfamiliar with area. She said a toxicology report on the woman would take months.
The sergeant said police so far have been unable to find the woman’s family.
