The 50th anniversary of Knott’s Scary Farm looks back at a half century of haunt history without resting on the laurels of the past as the granddaddy of Halloween events kicks off another season in the fog with all the blood, guts and gore you’ve come to fear and dread.
Knott’s Scary Farm opened for its 50th season on Thursday, Sept. 21 and will run on select dates through Oct. 31 with 10 haunted mazes, five scare zones and four live shows at the Buena Park theme park.
Knott’s Scary Farm 2023 debuted three new haunted mazes (Cinema Slasher, Room 13 and Chilling Chambers), a new Broadway-style horror comedy musical (“Music, Monsters & Mayhem”), three shows from decades past (“The Hanging Uncancelled,” “Le Magnifique Carnaval du Grotesque” and “Dr. Cleaver Returns”) and a returning fan-favorite scare zone (The Gauntlet).

Knott’s Berry Farm has been stepping up its game in recent years to compete with the Southern California haunt leader Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and to keep the constantly-improving Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Fright Fest at bay and newcomer Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld San Diego from nipping at its heels.
Let’s take a closer look at the new entries and returnees at the 50th anniversary of Knott’s Scary Farm.
Cinema Slasher
Cinema Slasher was the best of the three new haunted mazes with an immersive storyline that helped stitch together a series of throwback tributes to past Halloween Haunt mazes including Camp Gonnagetcha, Trick or Treat and Slaughterhouse.
The realistic scenarios and scripted scares in each set helped tell a simple story that took Scary Farmers through a series of movie screens as they entered horror movie scenes.
