A man driving the wrong direction on the 91 Freeway in Corona struck another car early Monday, Oct. 2, resulting in the death of both drivers, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision happened about 12:10 a.m. in the left, westbound lane just west of the 15 Freeway. Both cars caught fire.
Rescuers were able to pull the victim, 22-year-old Placentia resident Jeremy Breen, from his Mitsubishi Lancer, said Officer Javier Navarro, a CHP spokesman. But he was pronounced dead about 25 minutes later, the Riverside County Coroner’s Office said.
The other driver, in a Tesla Model 3, could not be rescued, Navarro said. That driver was not publicly identified. Both drivers were traveling alone.
Investigators were trying to determine where the Tesla entered the freeway and why it was headed in the wrong direction, Navarro said. They had not yet learned whether the Tesla driver was impaired.
“When traveling at night, definitely be aware of traffic that could be approaching you,” Navarro said.
