The 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks began in Orange County on Sunday with a Walk to Remember at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana.
Visitors walked 2,200 steps around the park, a tribute to the first responders who races into the World Trade Center towers to rescue those trapped after terrorists flew planes into the New York City buildings. The length of the walk symbolizes the 110 flights of stairs they would have climbed, organizers said.
This was the event’s second year.
Local remembrances continue Monday with the Orange County Fire Authority’s 8:30 a.m. ceremony at its Regional Fire Operations and Training Center in Irvine, which will include an honor guard and bell ringing ceremony, speakers and the center’s 9/11 memorial.
At 11 a.m. the Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in Yorba Linda will have its annual ceremony in its East Room remembering those who died.
At 6 p.m. the city of Mission Viejo is having a Patriot’s Day ceremony at the Oso Creek Trailhead Memorial flagpole (next to the Potocki Center of the Arts’ lower parking lot) that will include speakers and a candlelight remembrance.
Also at 6 p.m. in Huntington Beach a Patriot’s Day ceremony will be held at Pier Plaza.
At 7 p.m., Church of Grace in Yorba Linda will host a community remembrance.
