Mater Dei’s girls volleyball team is No. 1 in the nation after winning the Durango Fall Classic this past weekend at Las Vegas.
Mater Dei beat Mira Costa 2-1 in the tournament’s Championship Division final on Saturday. The Monarchs had lost to Mira Costa earlier this season.
This week Mater Dei moved to No. 1 in the MaxPreps national rankings. The Monarchs were No. 2 last week and Mira Costa was No. 1.
Mater Dei senior setter Julia Kakkis was selected tournament MVP. Mater Dei had three other players selected to the all-tournament team: senior libero Malyssa Cawa, senior outside hitter Izzy Clark and sophomore outside hitter Layli Ostovar.
Monarchs coach Dan O’Dell said the team’s depth usually separates it from other teams.
“It’s not like we have that kid who is the best in the world,” O’Dell said. “What we have is a lot of really good volleyball players.”
Mater Dei, which took a 30-2 record into its match Tuesday against Santa Margarita, beat another CIF Southern Section team, Sierra Canyon, in the semifinals. The Monarchs lost the first set in the semifinals and in the finals.
Huntington Beach finished seventh in the Durango tournament’s Championship Division. Oilers sophomore outside hitter Addison Williams was placed on the all-tournament team.
