Decathletes from Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies and Verdugo Hills High School topped the scoreboard — achieving the perfect score of 30,000 — in unofficial results at the 2023 Los Angeles Unified School District Academic Decathlon “Super Quiz” competition on Saturday, Feb. 4, in the gym at Downtown L.A.’s Edward R. Roybal Learning Center.
The winning team and official final standings will be announced on Saturday, Feb. 25 at a special awards ceremony at Sylmar’s L.A. Mission College. The team with the highest score and additional wildcard teams will compete in the 2023 California Academic Decathlon, scheduled for March in Santa Clara.
The U.S. Academic Decathlon Nationals are scheduled for April 27-29 in Frisco, Texas.
On Saturday, next in line in the unofficial results was Science Academy STEM Magnet in North Hollywood, racking up 27,000 points. Decathlon juggernauts Bell and Abraham Lincoln high schools followed with 26,000 points.
The rest of Saturday’s top unofficial finishers:
- Van Nuys and San Pedro high schools, 24,000 points.
- Maywood Center for Enriched Studies Magnet, 23,000 points.
- Gardena High School, 22,000 points.
- James A. Garfield and John Marshall high schools, 21,000 points.
- William Howard Taft Charter High School, 20,000 points.
- Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, Reseda Charter High School and Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences, 19,000 points.
- Ulysses S. Grant High School, Lake Balboa College Preparatory Magnet K-12 and James Monroe High School,18,000 points.
School bands, banners and mascots paraded with team members from 41 L.A. Unified schools into the event. On hand to cheer the decathletes were Board President Jackie Goldberg, Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson, Board Member Dr. Rocío Rivas, Chief Academic Officer Frances Baez and Beyond the Bell Executive Director Debe Loxton.
This year’s study topic was, “The American Revolution and the New Nation.”
