A man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of carjacking a vehicle in Van Nuys with a year-old child still inside, but the vehicle and the boy were recovered a short distance away.
The carjacking was reported at about 2 p.m. near Woodman Avenue and Sherman Way, police said. The pilfered vehicle and the boy — who was unharmed — were found a short time later near Woodman and Saticoy Street in Panorama City, according to reports from the scene.
The suspect was taken into custody, but his name was not immediately available.
The father of the briefly abducted child was at the scene when the arrest was made, and he angrily tried to attack the handcuffed suspect. Video from the scene showed the father being restrained by police officers and led away from the suspect.
The father, Gustavo Flores, told ABC7 at the scene that the boy’s mother called him while he was at work nearby and frantically told him, “The baby’s gone.”
Flores said the woman had stopped at a Starbucks at Woodman and Sherman Way and the baby was asleep, so she was getting out to grab a mobile order she had placed. But when she got out, the suspect pushed her out of the way and drove off.
