Four GOP presidential contenders, including former President Donald Trump, are headed to Orange County — along with a bevy of Republican voters and activists for the state party’s fall convention that begins Friday, Sept. 29.
That means increased traffic in an already-congested part of Anaheim, countering demonstrations planned around the Anaheim Marriott and several fundraisers for various Republican candidates up and down the ballot.

There are no major road closures planned, Anaheim spokesperson Mike Lyster said Thursday morning, but commuters can expect increased traffic on two internal roads near the CAGOP convention this weekend: Convention Way off of Harbor Boulevard leading into the Marriott and Hotel Way off of West Katella Way that also leads into the Marriott alongside the Hilton.
“They will not be closed, but we would advise people to expect traffic impacts there,” said Lyster. “More people than usual in the area and heavier traffic.”
That especially may be true Friday morning and midday when Trump is scheduled to speak at a luncheon at the convention, bringing additional security to the area.
“We do expect to see people out expressing themselves, and most of that we would expect to take place near the Marriott and near what is called the Grand Plaza,” said Lyster, noting the city has ample experience hosting presidents and other big-name political figures.
Additional police will be stationed in the area, he said, but one traffic plus: No event is scheduled at the nearby Convention Center this weekend. The CAGOP convention, however, is close to the Disney theme parks and, in particular, one of the main parking areas, so attendees could deal with congestion.
