A 33-year-old security guard pleaded guilty on Wednesday and was immediately sentenced to nine years in prison for stabbing a 72-year-old Coto de Caza resident at the entrance to the gate-guarded community.
Luis Fabian Centeno pleaded guilty to attempted murder and inflicting injury on an elder adult, both felonies, and admitted sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury on an elder and the personal use of a deadly weapon. As part of the plea deal, a sentencing enhancement for attempted premeditated murder, which would have mandated a life sentence, was dismissed.
Centeno was given credit for 1,306 days behind bars.
Sheriff’s deputies were called at 11:42 a.m. Oct. 7, 2020, to Coto De Caza Drive and Antonio Parkway and took Centeno into custody, according to sheriff’s deputies.
The defendant was a security guard for the community, but it was unclear whether he was on duty at the time of the attack, said Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators have said there was a traffic collision and argument before the stabbing.
