GAME OF THE WEEK
NO. 2 ORANGE LUTHERAN (3-2) VS. NO. 5 JSERRA (3-2)
Where, when: JSerra High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Analysis: This is the first week of league play in the Trinity League. Orange Lutheran has lost two in a row. Both losses were to undefeated teams in MaxPreps’ national Top 20: 40-6 to No. 19 Sierra Canyon last week and 35-10 in Arizona to No. 20 Chandler. Orange Lutheran quarterback TJ Lateef did not play against Sierra Canyon because of injury. Freshman Julian Medina and sophomore Alex Medyn played the position against Sierra Canyon. Lateef’s status is unknown for this week’s game. Lancers junior running back Steve Chavez is averaging 89 yards rushing a game. JSerra lost to Sierra Canyon, too – 9-7 in the opening week of the season. The Lions also lost on the road last week to undefeated Clovis North of Fresno 23-7. Orange Lutheran’s defense is good enough to get the Lancers the win in this one, no matter who is at quarterback for them.
Winner: Orange Lutheran
NO. 4 SERVITE (4-1) VS. NO. 1 MATER DEI (5-0)
Where, when: Santa Ana Stadium, Friday, 7 p.m.
Analysis: A few months ago this did not look like much of a Trinity League opener. Servite’s 28-24 win over Los Alamitos three weeks ago changed that. This still could be a one-sided game because of Mater Dei’s size, skill and depth, but Servite’s good start makes this an interesting matchup. Mater Dei’s defense led the visiting Monarchs to a 20-7 win over St. Frances Academy of Baltimore last week. Junior linebacker Nasir Wyatt had three sacks. Servite traveled to St. Paul last week and exited with a 34-13 win. Servite’s leading tacklers are sophomore Saxon Churchwell and freshman Isaiah Leilua. Servite is better than expected, but the Friars are up against what might be the most talented Mater Dei football team of the past 30 years.
Winner: Mater Dei
