The Southern California News Group’s sportswriters and photographers were recognized for excellence with major national awards this week in the industry’s highest circulation category for 2023 by the Associated Press Sports Editors.
Olympics and investigations reporter Scott M. Reid was recognized in three reporting and writing categories. Reid’s body of work was among top 10 in the country for National Beat Writing. Reid’s story on the firing of Cal swimming coach Teri McKeever was among the top 10 stories in the breaking news category. The piece capped an investigation that he broke in the spring of 2022. And his story on Steve Prefontaine vs. Gerry Lindgren and the history of Pac-12 cross country was in the top 10 in the Explanatory category. Reid has earned APSE honors in investigations 16 times.
Sports columnist Mirjam Swanson broke through with a top 10 honor for columns, one of the industry’s highest honors. Swanson became a columnist for the SCNG after Mark Whicker retired in 2022. Whicker is nominated for the APSE’s lifetime achievement honor, the Red Smith Award, again this year.
USC sports reporter Luca Evans was recognized as a top 10 beat writer in his first year covering the Trojans for SCNG.
SCNG photographers were also honored. Paul Bersebach and Will Lester had top 10 honors for sports action shots.
“It’s great to see the outstanding work of our reporters, columnists and photographers recognized,” SCNG Sports Editor Tom Moore said. “The awards reflect well on the entire department – including editors, designers, digital producers and the copy desk – that works so hard and so professionally every day to produce one of the country’s best sections day-in, day-out, year-in and year-out, through all kinds of challenges in one of the best sports markets in the world.”
