LOS ANGELES — The King has officially ascended to the throne.
LeBron James became the greatest scorer in NBA history on Tuesday night, draining a fadeaway jump-shot with 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter of their game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, pushing him one point past Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s career regular-season total of 38,387, for the record.
Abdul-Jabbar took over the top spot on April 5, 1984 – eight months before James was born – when he broke the mark previously held by another former Lakers center, Wilt Chamberlain.
James got off to a fast start in front of a crowd that howled nearly every time he touched the ball, scoring eight points in the first quarter and 12 more in the second to put him ahead of record pace at halftime. His jumper gave him the 15th and 16th points of the third quarter to eclipse the mark.
James, in his 20th season, already held the NBA record for career postseason points (7,631).
Much more to come on this story.
