WINNIPEG, Manitoba — In their first game in nearly a week, the Kings proved they still have momentum on their side.
Adrian Kempe stickhandled into the slot and beat Eric Comrie with a wrist shot to the top right corner 1:14 into overtime to give the Kings a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night, their fifth consecutive win.
Alex Turcotte also scored and Darcy Kuemper made 18 saves to help the Kings (24-10-5), who played for the first time since beating Tampa Bay at home last Saturday night. Their game against Calgary scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed because of the wildfires that have been raging in the Los Angeles area.
Kings defenseman Jordan Spence briefly thought he scored the game’s first goal at 15:59 of the first period, but the Jets challenged for offsides, and the goal was overturned upon review.
After the Kings outshot Winnipeg 6-4 in a scoreless first period and Comrie stopped Brandt Clarke on a breakaway early in the second, they took a 1-0 lead 4:39 into the middle frame.
Kings defenseman Jacob Moverare received a pass at the right point and fed Kempe in the high slot. He spun and shot as he skated away from the net, and the puck was deflected by Turcotte at the left hash marks and over the left pad of Comrie for his fifth goal of the season.
The Jets (28-12-3) did not capitalize on their first power play of the game, which began at 6:46 of the third period, but they did on their second after Alex Laferriere was whistled for hooking Nikolaj Ehlers at 9:58.
Gabriel Vilardi fed Scheifele in the left circle, and he scored his team-leading 24th goal of the season with a one-timer to tie the score at 1-1 with 9:38 left and deny Kuemper his third shutout of the season.
Comrie made 21 saves for the Jets, who have dropped four of five (1-2-2) but earned a point in the standings to join Vegas and Washington atop the NHL with 59. Comrie has lost his past seven starts (0-6-1) while serving as the backup to Connor Hellebuyck,…
