There’s one word that sums up former Crespi baseball coach Scott Muckey.
“Egg-egg.”
Okay … so it’s technically not a word, but the expression has been a trademark of Muckey’s for a long time, back to his days as a coach at LA Valley College in the 1980’s.
“When I played (at Valley) in the early 1990’s they were using it,” Birmingham coach Matt Mowry said. “He was already at Crespi, but Egg-egg came from Muck.”
Muckey was the coach at Crespi from 1987 to 2014 when he retired and later died at 63 years old in March of 2016. Muckey’s name seems to always come up in the spring, but it’s been more prevalent in recent weeks as Crespi made its way to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 final against South Hills Saturday at 1 p.m. at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Crespi is 2-1 all time in finals (all with Muckey at the helm). The other crown coming in 2003 with standout player Trevor Plouffe. Crespi was the runner-up in 2004.
Crespi’s current coach Mike Glendenning graduated from Crespi in 1994 and played for Muckey, so did three other assistant coaches on Glendenning’s staff – Nick Santoro (’04), Daniel Olivo (’14) and Matthew Orosco (’14).
“The thought of Muckey has been on the minds of the coaching staff,” Glendenning said. “Not so much the players, although they know who he is. But when alumni and former players come to the games, especially during the playoffs, they come up and tell us that Muckey is smiling down on us – stuff like that.”
What does “egg-egg” actually mean, exactly?
“It depends on how you use it,” Mowry said. “But most the time it’s used as a greeting, like aloha.”
Evidently, it’s a multi-purpose phrase.
“I know it’s used…
