THE GAME: One Dodgers split squad was held to four hits in a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Camelback Ranch on Saturday afternoon while the other split squad beat the San Francisco Giants 13-8 in Scottsdale.
PITCHING REPORT: Noah Syndergaard allowed two singles over four scoreless innings against the Cubs, then gave up a home run to Yan Gomes (the first of four by the Cubs) before leaving in the fifth inning. … Left-hander Alex Vesia followed him and gave up back-to-back home runs to Mike Tauchman and Christopher Morel. … Shelby Miller’s spring ERA went to 16.88 after he gave up a two-run home run to Blake Sabol in the game against the Giants. … Right-hander Yency Almonte made his first appearance of the spring and gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in his inning against the Giants. Brusdar Graterol pitched a scoreless inning and Tyler Cyr struck out all three batters he faced in his inning.
HITTING REPORT: James Outman had a solo home run for one of the Dodgers’ four hits against the Cubs. Hunter Feduccia had an RBI single to drive in the other run. … Luke Williams had a triple and a three-run home run against the Giants. Miguel Vargas was 2 for 4 with his third double of the spring. Steven Duggar drove in four runs with a home run and a double. Devin Mann and Buddy Reed also hit home runs.
DEFENSE REPORT: Shortstop Miguel Rojas made a pair of outstanding plays, mirror images of each other. In the third inning, he dove to his backhand to grab a hard ground ball hit by Cubs outfielder Christopher Morel and popped up to throw him out. In the sixth, he made the same play on a ball to his left hit by Dansby Swanson. … JD Martinez is expected to be the Dodgers’ designated hitter on an everyday basis this season, but he started in left field against the Cubs on Saturday. Martinez hasn’t played a regular-season game in left field since the 2021 season.
