Topline:
Anaheim holds a special election today, Oct. 3, to decide whether to require hotels and large event centers to pay their workers at least $25 an hour, plus guaranteed workload limits and safety measures.
The context: If approved, Anaheim would have the highest minimum wage in the state for hospitality workers, though Los Angeles is also considering a $25 minimum wage for hotel workers.
Measure A’s safety and workload provisions mirror existing rules in Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Long Beach, Glendale, Irvine, and Los Angeles.
Who’s for and against the initiative? Measure A is sponsored by the hospitality workers’ union UNITE HERE Local 11.
It’s opposed by Anaheim’s hotel lobby. They’ve spent 12 times as much as the union to try and defeat the measure — most of that money from Disney.
How can Anaheim residents vote? Ballots need to be postmarked by today if returned by mail. Anaheim residents can also take their ballot to an official ballot dropbox or vote in person at one of the city’s six vote centers.
