Nearly everyone who makes up the congressional delegation from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties agreed on Friday, Dec. 1 to expel embattled New York Rep. George Santos from the House.
Out of the local House members, only Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, whose district includes Temecula, voted against it.
In Orange County, both Republicans, Reps. Young Kim and Michelle Steel, voted for the expulsion Friday morning as did the four Democrats: Reps. Lou Correa, Mike Levin, Katie Porter and Linda Sánchez.
Lawmakers from Riverside and San Bernardino counties, however, were not unanimous in their vote, with Issa voting against: Republican Reps. Ken Calvert and Jay Obernolte voted to kick Santos out of the House, along with Democratic Reps. Pete Aguilar, Raul Ruiz, Mark Takano and Norma Torres.
Every member of Los Angeles County’s congressional delegation — and that includes Republican Reps. Mike Garcia, Obernolte and Steel — agreed to expel Santos. Those yes votes also include Democrats Nanette Barragán, Julia Brownley, Tony Cardenas, Judy Chu, Robert Garcia, Jimmy Gomez, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Ted Lieu, Grace Napolitano, Adam Schiff, Brad Sherman and Maxine Waters.
Santos is only the sixth lawmaker in history to be kicked out of the chamber. Santos, who was the subject of a damning House Ethics Committee report that accused him of breaking federal law, had said he would not run for reelection but refused to resign ahead of the vote.
Bakersfield Republican Kevin McCarthy, the most recent former House speaker, did not vote. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, also a former speaker, voted to expel.
The expulsion resolution passed in a 311-114 vote, with 105 Republicans voting in favor.
