Alhambra High School claimed victory for the second year in a row at the 43rd annual Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon. The announcement was made on Thursday, Feb. 13 at an awards banquet held at the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
Denise Jaramillo, Alhambra Unified School District superintendent, said the school’s success can be attributed to long hours and hard work.
“My reaction is excitement and pride, but not surprised because as with anything in life, when people put a lot of hard work, work as a team and help one another, you achieve and that’s what I see with these teams. They have a dedicated coach, and spend a lot of time together working as a team, building on one another’s strengths,” said Jaramillo.
Teams from 34 high schools in the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon studied and prepared for the 2024-2025 theme “Our Changing Climate” in order to compete in 10 events. Events included art, economics, essay, an interview, language and literature, math, music, science, social science and speech.
According to a press release, nearly 420 students forming 55 teams competed in the 2024-2025 decathlon. In addition, students raised nearly $2,000 for gift cards for families affected by the Eaton and Palisades wildfires. The money raised was donated to the Greater Los Angeles Education Foundation (www.glaef.org).
Participants in the decathlon were from all grade point averages: 3.80 and up (Honors group); 3.20-3.799 (Scholastic group); up to 3.199 (Varsity group).
