A 30-year-old man shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies in a Diamond Bar neighborhood in June disregarded authorities’ orders to surrender and threatened a nearby motorist before he was shot, body-worn camera footage released on Friday, July 28, shows.
Around 11:30 a.m. on June 19, authorities began receiving several calls about a man, identified as 30-year-old Benjamin Chin, walking along the 2900 block of Crooked Creek Drive wearing a ballistic vest and firing shots from a rifle, according to the LASD.
Deputies said Chin stabbed his mother in the back outside their home before continuing down Crooked Creek Drive toward Diamond Bar Boulevard with the rifle, with multiple security camera videos from homes capturing Chin on the sidewalk.
A neighbor who called 911 said that he could see Chin assaulting his mother outside their home before continuing down the street carrying the rifle while another resident who drove by Chin as he made his way down the street told dispatchers that he aimed his rifle towards her before raising it up and firing in the air.
Chin fired around seven to eight shots before deputies arrived, authorities said. His mother followed her son through the neighborhood pleading with him to drop the rifle.
The mother, who was covered in blood from the stab wound, approached deputies and begged them not to kill her son, the video shows.
Chin ignored orders from deputies to surrender and continued walking onto Diamond Bar Boulevard. A driver in a Tesla in the far traffic lane along Diamond Bar Boulevard was forced to come to a stop as two patrol cars were stopped next to him in the other two lanes.
Chin continued to advance toward the Tesla with authorities ordering him to drop the rifle. At least two deputies then shot and struck the suspect.
Chin was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. The rifle he was carrying was determined…
