Archaeology Day at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Visitor Center: Family friendly event with presentations by local archaeologists, view local artifacts, dig up “artifacts” in an excavation box, practice throwing an atlatl spear or a rabbit stick at a target, flint knapping demonstration on turning stones into arrowheads and a pigment and storytelling workshop by Alan Salazar, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Oct. 14. A blessing and acknowledging the first native peoples of the land, followed by a Native American presentation by Dayna Barrios, 9:30-11 a.m. Also, special lectures by archaeologists at 11 a.m. (James Snead, PhD); noon (Colleen M. Fall Harvest Festival at Underwood Family Farms: Theme weekends, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.: “Antique Tractors,” Oct. 14-15 ($28); “Wild West,” Oct. 21-22 ($28); “All About Pumpkins,” Oct. 28-29 ($28). Event includes animal center, a chicken show, corn maze, live entertainment and shows, games, rides and entry to “pick-your-own” fields (check website for more details).
