PASADENA — Rose Parade watchers awakened to a chilly, however rain-free, morning on the first day of 2024, as temperatures hovered just under 50 degrees as Monday, Jan. 1 arrived.
A forecast of a slight chance of rain earlier in the week turned into mostly sunny skies, keeping alive the Tournament of Roses’ streak of years since of 2006 with no rain. It was, however, brisk early Monday, with temperatures bobbing around 47 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The parade runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rose Bowl Game scheduled for 2 p.m. in the afternoon. Live coverage will air on ABC, KTLA 5, NBC, Univision, RFD-TV, the Cowboy and Cowgirl Channels, and Great American Family.
At 3 a.m., on the corner of Walnut street and Sierra Madre Blvd, Rodolfo Velasco and Marisol Cruz sat over a propane fire pit awaiting the sunrise.
This has been a tradition for more than15 years, Velasco said.
“All my kids used to come, but they grew up,” he added. “They go their way. But we still come. We love music. And meeting all the different people — It’s just exciting.
Before dawn, the streets along the route were quiet save for the humming from the makeshift caravan across the street.

Near the couple, under layers of blankets and a Kuromi beanie, slept their youngest child. The family had to get up extra early to make the trek from their home in the Inland Empire.
Cruz said the effort is worth it, because the live experience beats out watching from home any day.
Guadalupe Argueta and Juan Godinez — parade first-timers from Hamilton, N.J. — agreed with that sentiment,
They were visiting friends in LA for the holidays and thought “why not?” said Godinez.
“You want to see life!” Godinez said, so they decided on on the spur of the moment to “see it live.”
