It was 45 years ago that John Carpenter’s “Halloween” first stabbed its way into the hearts of horror fans.
With the silent knife-wielding killer Michael Myers, the unforgettable eerie film score and Jaime Lee Curtis’ standout performance that earned her the undisputed title of the Scream Queen, the 1978 indie flick helped launch the slasher film genre and spawned a 13-film franchise.
The original is still considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time, and if you doubt that, go ahead and ask the hardcore fans who are expected at Halloween: 45 Years of Terror, a convention that will celebrate the legacy of the movie at the Pasadena Convention Center on Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
“It’s a gathering of the ‘Halloween’ tribe. The fans of these series are really passionate about it,” said Malek Akkad, president of Trancas International Films, producers of the franchise.
The convention has been held every five years since 2003 to pay homage to the film.
This year is a milestone anniversary so here’s what you need to do if you attend Halloween 45.
‘Halloween’ on location
The first day of this convention on Friday, Sept. 29 isn’t taking place inside of the convention center, but rather in the streets of Pasadena and other nearby areas where the movie was filmed in the late ’70s.
“It is an eight-hour tour and I know it sounds like a lot but it goes by so fast,” said Sean Clark, one of the convention organizers who will also be a tour guide during the day. “Halloween started a whole new genre of slasher. There something about that movie that just resonates with people.”
