Assemblywoman Blanca E. Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) has presented $3 million to the Emanate Health Foundation for its new emergency department and ICU at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina.
State Sen. Susan Rubio, Mayor Rosario Diaz and West Covina Councilmember Ollie Cantos joined her to celebrate the funding secured through the 2023 state budget.
“For years, this funding opportunity has been a top priority of mine. This budget request was put in jeopardy due to a global pandemic and our state’s fiscal deficit,” said Rubio. “However, with perseverance and an outstanding partnership with Emanate Health, we successfully secured state dollars for this project.”
The state dollars will support construction for a 60,000-square-foot Queen of the Valley Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. According to officials, prior to the pandemic the facility served more than 80,000 patients in a space originally built to only treat 35,000 a year.
“Assemblymember Rubio and Sen. Rubio are a part of this community and are now a part of the Emanate Health family,” Emanate Health President & CEO Roger Sharma said.
According to Sharma there are 3,500 Emanate employees and 700 physicians living and serving the San Gabriel Valley. Emanate Health has three hospitals, Inter-Community Hospital in Covina, Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina and Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora.
The Queen of the Valley’s emergency and ICU are scheduled to be complete in spring 2024 and officials report it is expected to serve 120,000 people a year.
In total, Assemblywoman Rubio secured $3.5 million for the San Gabriel Valley though the state budget. As representative of the 48th Assembly District she serves the cities of West Covina, Baldwin Park, Glendora, Covina, Azusa, West Puente Valley, Valinda, Duarte, South San Jose Hills, Vincent, Citrus, Charter Oak, South Monrovia Island, Mayflower Village, Irwindale and Monrovia.
