A water rescue was conducted in Duarte on Monday, March 13, after eight people and six dogs were caught in the wash along the San Gabriel River.

Firefighters were called around 6 p.m. to the river, near Encanto Park, after the eight victims were trapped in the river, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson Martin Rangel.
By about 8:30 p.m., the victims, who had been carried downstream to different parts of the river, were rescued — with three of them hoisted from the river by helicopter. The six dogs had also been pulled from the river, Rangel said.
Crews were told by one victim that a ninth person had submerged underwater and swept down the river, but by about 10 p.m. the search was called off and no evidence of another victim was found, Rangel said.

One of the eight victims rescued was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
