According to the United States Department of Labor, President Grover Cleveland signed a law on June 28, 1894, making the first Monday in September a national holiday for Labor Day.

Government offices, courts, libraries and schools — Los Angeles city and county, national and state — are closed for Labor Day.

Here is a sampling of other services that are closed, have altered service or a regular schedule on Monday.

Banks: Closed, as are New York Stock Exchange markets (www.nyse.com/markets/hours-calendars).

Libraries: Closed. Los Angeles City Library (www.lapl.org/holiday-closures), and Los Angles County Library (lacountylibrary.org/).

Mail: The U.S. Postal Service does not deliver mail and post offices are closed (about.usps.com/newsroom/events; www.usps.com)

Transit: Buses and subway services in Los Angeles run on a Holiday schedule on Monday. For example, the G Line (Orange Line): tinyurl.com/5vx8ky59; www.metro.net).

Metrolink trains operate on a Saturday schedule on Monday on the Ventura County and Antelope Valley lines. Also, a Saturday schedule on the 91/Perris Valley, Inland Empire-Orange County and the San Bernardino lines. No train operation on the Riverside Line. Purchase a $10 Holiday Pass on Sept. 2-3 for unlimited rides on Monday’s operating lines. Details: metrolinktrains.com/schedules/labor-day. www.metrolinktrains.com

Trash: Pickup schedule in Los Angeles will be delayed by one day: Monday’s trash will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday’s trash will be picked up on Wednesday, and so on through the week (800-773-2489; click on What We Do, then Collection and then see Holiday Trash Collection here: www.lacitysan.org).

Trash is picked up on a regular schedule in the cities of Burbank (818-238-3800; see paragraph five, bit.ly/3yvi8r3) and Glendale (818-548-3916; look under Collection Schedule, tinyurl.com/486wukn7).
