What’s closed for César Chávez Day, on March 31, in the Los Angeles area

Government offices — Los Angeles city and county, and state — and also superior courts and libraries are closed for labor leader César E. Chávez’s birthday holiday.

Los Angeles city and county offices and libraries are closed on March 31 in observance of César Chávez Day.

  • Los Angeles city offices are closed. For example, the Department of Building and Safety, 2025 holidays schedule, https://dbs.lacity.gov/our-organization/locations-offices/holidays
  • Los Angeles Public Library 2025 holiday schedule, www.lapl.org/holiday-closures
  • Los Angeles County 2025 holidays, https://ttc.lacounty.gov/county-holidays/
  • Los Angeles County Library, www.facebook.com/LACountyLibrary and lacountylibrary.org/library-locator/
  • Los Angeles County Superior Courts 2025 schedule, www.lacourt.org/holiday/ui/index.aspx

 

California state offices are closed on March 31 in observance of César Chávez Day. For example, the Department of Motor Vehicles’ 2025 holidays, www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/holidays/

In addition, many public school district schools are closed on March 31 including Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD instructional calendar, 2024-2025, tinyurl.com/39mvzush).

César Chávez Day is not a federal holiday.

Chávez was born on March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona. He died on April 23, 1993 in San Luis, Arizona, and is buried at the former headquarters of the United Farm Workers, in Keene, California, in Kern County (www.nationalparks.org/explore/parks/cesar-e-chavez-national-monument).

Here is a sampling of services that have a regular schedule on March 31.

Banks: Open.
