A San Fernando Valley man was arrested Thursday, Dec. 21, after he allegedly sent a string of threatening emails to the FBI, including some in which he referenced the Unabomber, the Department of Justice said.
The FBI began receiving the emailed threats from Mark William Anten, 52, in July, officials said. In one of them, sent Nov. 2, Anten allegedly told FBI agents that he had similarities to the Unabomber, also known as Theodore Kaczynski, whose 20-year bombing campaign killed three people and injured nearly two dozen more, the DOJ said.
On Nov. 20, two FBI officials interviewed Anten at his residence, where he allegedly admitted to sending the previous communications to the officers. The officials told Anten to stop contacting agents, authorities said.
Authorities said Anten continued to email FBI agents, and on Dec. 5, he threatened to “Unabomb” the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, the DOJ said.
The following day, Anten visited the Los Angeles office and later emailed agents that he visited their building and would continue to do so. Surveillance footage confirmed Anten’s presence there, authorities said.
Authorities arrested Anten on Thursday and he was charged on suspicion of making threats by interstate communication. He is jailed without bond.
