Granada Hills Charter High School held its 2023 graduation on Thursday, June 1, during a cool and happy evening on the field at the school’s John Elway Stadium. The ceremony welcomed 1,091 candidates for the long-anticipated honor.
The groundbreaking City of Angels Pipe Band, made up of GHCHS alumni, which is also performing in June at the WEHO Pride Parade and the Chicago Highland Games, continued the tradition of playing the pipes at the “Home of the Highlanders.” Iliana Acevedo, the school’s ASB President, addressed her fellow graduates and fireworks were planned at the conclusion of the ceremony.
The high school opened in 1960 in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Although it still has ties to the LAUSD, the school is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year as an independent charter school. It is also the largest charter high school in the United States.
One of charter high school’s claim to fame has been nine wins, beginning in 2011, by its academic teams at the United States Academic Decathlon competitions. The school was named a California Distinguished School in 2021 by the California Department of Education.
