Another Starbucks customer sued the coffee store chain Thursday, alleging he suffered injuries after a hot drink handed out by a drive-thru employee in North Hollywood spilled onto his lap due to an unsecured lid.

Ernesto Vladimir Sanchez Avendano’s Alhambra Superior Court negligence suit seeks unspecified general and special damages.

RELATED: Delivery driver severely burned by hot tea at Starbucks awarded $50 million by LA jury

According to the suit, Avendano went to the Starbucks store on the 12500 block of Sherman Way in North Hollywood on April 3, 2023, ordered a hot drink in the drive-thru and proceeded to the pickup window. However, the lid on the drink handed to him by an employee was not properly fastened, and hot liquid spilled onto Avendano’s lap, leaving him with “severe burns, disfigurement and debilitating nerve damage to his genitals and buttocks,” the suit states.

“No reasonable expectation of an unsecure lid on a cup of hot liquid can be attributed to plaintiff’s conduct,” the suit states.

Recently, a Los Angeles Superior Court jury ordered Starbucks to pay $50 million to Postmates delivery driver Michael Garcia, who suffered third-degree burns when a hot drink spilled on him in February 2020 due to an improperly secured lid after his order was handed to him at a South Los Angeles drive-thru.

Last Thursday, Sabrina Michelle Hermes filed a similar negligence suit regarding injuries she contends she suffered at a Starbucks store drive-thru in Norwalk in 2023.

A Starbucks Corp. representative issued a statement Wednesday regarding Avendano’s suit.

“We have always been committed to the highest safety standards in our stores, including the handling of hot drinks,” the statement read. “We have not received service of this suit but will carefully review Mr. Avendano’s claims.”

Earlier Wednesday, the company responded to Hermes’ lawsuit, saying the plaintiff’s claims are “without merit.”

“… We are aware of Ms. Hermes’ claims…

By Chris Ramon

Over the past few weeks, you’ve heard from me and members of my incredible team at Pasadena Humane as we navigated the challenges of the Eaton fire.

While this disaster tested us all, it also revealed the true strength of our community — the unwavering support, teamwork and shared dedication to our mission. Seeing this firsthand has been both humbling and inspiring.

As the new author of this column, I look forward to sharing more stories of hope, resilience, and the countless happy endings we create for animals in need — including those affected by the Eaton fire. But first, I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself.

For as long as I can remember, a love for animals has been a central part of who I am. Like many of you, I grew up with pets. That experience of sharing my life with them sparked a lifelong desire to help animals in need.

I remember the first time I reunited a lost dog with its family. I must have been about seven or eight when I found a dog wandering the streets of my La Cañada neighborhood. Thankfully, the dog had a collar with its owner’s contact information. To this day, I vividly remember the owners’ joy in finding their beloved pup. Helping animals became part of my life’s mission from that moment on.

I started volunteering at Pasadena Humane when I was in high school. Even then, I knew I was part of something special. For many years, however, I believed the only way to have a career in animal welfare was to become a veterinarian.

That all changed when I accepted my first leadership role in animal welfare over a decade ago at Michelson Found Animals. My love for animals evolved into a meaningful career — one that I’ve been fortunate to continue at Pasadena Humane since joining the organization in 2018.

Now, with more than 20 years of experience leading teams and expanding programs, I have learned that in addition to strategy and decision-making, it’s about inspiring people, fostering collaboration and creating…

This week’s column is guest written by Chris Ramon, interim president and CEO of Pasadena Humane.

Sweet Angel was just 4 months old when a firefighter rescued her from the smoldering rubble of where a home once stood. The fact that she survived the Eaton fire was truly a miracle.

The tiny kitten suffered severe burns all over her body, but she was alive. Our animal control officer rushed her back to Pasadena Humane’s Intensive Care Unit where our veterinary team jumped into action to save her young life.

A veterinarian quickly assessed the kitten. Her fur was singed all over her body. She had significant burns all over her face and her paw pads. Her tiny eyes were sealed shut due to the trauma. The tips of her ears were curled and burned.

The ash and debris that coated her fur was gently removed using baby wipes as the team gingerly began to treat her burn wounds. They gave her fluids to help with dehydration and antibiotics for a growing infection on one of her injured paws.

Over the next month, Angel continued to receive the highest level of care for her extensive injuries. She was showing great signs of progress, both physically and mentally.

As her wounds began to heal, her adorable personality came through. She loved getting pets and would lean in for scratches during her daily bandage changes.

We remained hopeful that her original owner would come forward to identify her. But as each day passed, it seemed less and less likely.

Exactly one month after Angel arrived at the shelter, she was healthy and healed enough to find a new loving home. Within minutes of hitting the adoption floor, she was scooped up by a wonderful new guardian.

Our adoption counselor Ivy Gonzalez introduced Angel to her new mom Susan. It was a moment of healing for Ivy, who lost her family home in the Eaton fire just weeks earlier. Remarkably, Angel was found just a few houses away from where Ivy’s home had been located.

Ivy felt a strong connection with this kitten. Their stories were…

This week’s column is guest written by Chris Briffett, director of volunteer services at Pasadena Humane.

In times of crisis, a community’s true spirit shines through. In the wake of the Eaton fire, thousands of people stepped forward to support Pasadena Humane by volunteering their time. Their willingness to jump in wherever needed ensured we could expand services to meet the crisis head-on.

Volunteers played — and continue to play — a crucial role in every aspect of our response — caring for animals, staffing information tables, distributing pet food via our Pet Food Pantry, doing laundry, and answering phone calls. Their dedication continues to carry us through this unprecedented crisis.

In the immediate aftermath of the fire, many new needs emerged. Our first priority was providing care for the more than 500 animals who came into our shelter for emergency boarding. Being suddenly displaced from their homes and routines, our volunteers helped ease these pets into a new routine.

We quickly expanded our Doggie Valet program to ensure that the dogs in our care received multiple out-of-kennel breaks daily. To meet the needs of our growing canine population, temporary socialization and potty stations were set up around the shelter.

Among the many dedicated volunteers helping out with this program since the fire began, Kristen Sullivan has been a constant presence.

Although she only began volunteering at Pasadena Humane in late 2023, Kristen is a fixture around the shelter. She regularly helps with advanced dog socialization, humane education programs for kids, dog training classes, and special events. She even briefly fostered a young kitten before adopting her.

Since the fire, she has volunteered in eight-hour shifts, four days a week. Kristen remains deeply committed and describes her experience helping the pets who have lost their homes in the fire as a privilege.

“Until their families are able to take their pets home, I take the responsibility of…
