The Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles invited the public to a special Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, on Saturday, Nov. 4, at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills where the public was encouraged to build altars dedicated to their deceased loved ones.
The doors opened at 10:30 a.m. and the festivities were free, beginning with a blessing of altars at noon followed by a cultural celebration for people of all ages. It included a wide choice of food and vendors, traditional altars in honor of the departed, an art exhibit, folkloric dancers, live music and activities for children.
Holy Mass, celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Albert Bahhuth for the San Fernando Pastoral Region, started at 6:00 p.m.
Many visitors joined the San Fernando community to pray for the departed and to honor their memories at an upbeat and festive celebration. It was the second year it was held at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
The Día de los Muertos was also celebrated at Calvary Cemetery Cemetery and Mortuary in East Los Angeles, which observed the day for its tenth consecutive year, and it was also celebrated at Santa Clara Cemetery and Mortuary for the sixth time.
