Homeschooled kids got the chance to tour the Ocean Institute in Dana Point and learn about the area’s rich sea life and maritime history.
The center is usually open to larger school school groups during the week, but this event gave independent or smaller homeschool groups a chance to visit, officials said.
More than 300 people, kids and parents, learned about sea life, touching sharks, rays and sea stars. Groups also toured the Spirit of Dana Point, a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution.
March’s theme at the center is Maritime and Migration.
The Ocean Institute is planning another homeschool day in May and three for next year, official said. Registration for institute’s summer camps is also opening. More information can be found at oceaninstitute.org.
