San Juan Capistrano‘s newly renovated Arroyo Birdhouse Park is ready for new nests.
The city reopened the park last week after taking it over from the community in November to update birdhouses and enhance the landscape. The park, a local fixture for decades, is known for its eclectic birdhouses, handmade statues and various mementos contributed by residents over the years.
The park now holds a mix of new industry-standard birdhouses provided by the city as well as old birdhouses from the park before the city renovated it. The park received other upgrades as well, including native plants, a path, fencing, benches, a picnic table and a lending library courtesy of local Eagle Scout Troop 757.
The decision for the city to assume full responsibility for the park, located at Calle Arroyo and Via Sonora, was made last May, prompted by safety concerns for trail users nearby.
The City Council granted San Juan Capistrano the authority to assume the upkeep and improvements for the park, in addition to managing the park just like other city parks.
The park had been closed since December for the improvements.
Residents can still add birdhouses to keep with the tradition of park — some birdhouses had been dedicated in memory of loved ones — but each added birdhouse will be inspected and monitored by the city, officials said in November.
