Los Angeles-based Nashville hot chicken restaurant Angry Chickz — not to be confused with LA-based Red Chickz, another similarly named, choice Nashville hot chicken eatery — just opened its first Orange County location in Aliso Viejo on Friday, July 21.
Founded by in 2018 by David Mkhitaryan in an East Hollywood small strip mall, Angry Chickz has since opened 22 locations, with fast-casual spots across California, Arizona, and Las Vegas. The Aliso Viejo location is the chain’s 22nd store.
Nashville hot chicken, noted for its extreme heat and deep-fried crunch, allegedly dates back more than 70 years ago to a place called Prince’s Hot Chicken in Nashville’s north side. According to Serious Eats, “By all accounts, Prince’s is where hot chicken was born, and the legend goes like this: More than 70 years ago, Thornton Prince came home after a night of tomcatting to find his lady waiting at home, none too pleased. To teach him a lesson, she doctored his Sunday morning chicken with a wallop of spice.” The Scoville-scale scorching chicken proved a hit with the two-timer, as lore has it, who then put it on his restaurant’s menu, which in turn created a hot-chicken movement. Menu items at Angry Chickz include chicken sliders, chicken tenders sandwiched between slices of classic white bread, and tenders over rice and slaw. Sides include fries, mac and cheese, coleslaw and rice. Guests can choose their preferred level of heat, ranging from “country (no heat)” to “angry (sign a waiver)”
