Mission Viejo will play host to the 2024 USA Triathlon Collegiate Club national championship in April next year.
This will be the first time the national triathlon event will be held in Mission Viejo. Previously, it’s been held in Buford, Georgia.
The set-up for this event is slated to occur on April 11 and 12, and the triathlon will take place over the course of two days, April 13 and 14 (Saturday and Sunday).
There will be two races, the first consisting of the top 75 men and women, and with a mixed relay to follow. On April 14, the event will culminate with an Olympic distance race, featuring more than 1,000 athletes representing over 100 universities from around the country.
The USA Triathlon will utilize a similar course layout used by the Orange County Triathlon, which has been held annually in Mission Viejo for over 15 years. The OC Triathlon is slated to take place just two weeks later.
All of the races will start at Lake Mission Viejo for a one-mile swim and then be followed by a 12-mile bike ride, which will begin on Marguerite Parkway and head north to El Toro Road and continue through Santiago Canyon.
The running portion of the race will begin on the Aliso Creek Bike Trail and follow trails and streets back to the lake where the races will conclude.
Anticipated road closures would impact Marguerite Parkway, Olympiad Road, Los Alisos Boulevard and Mustang Run, the City Council said during its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
But councilmembers said no residents would be locked within their neighborhood during any portion of the race, and signage will be placed throughout impacted areas. Estimated closure times are 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 5 a.m. to noon on Sunday, but could be subject to change once the race date comes closer, according to a staff report.
