Lake Forest Councilmember Benjamin Yu was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence earlier this month, according to an Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson.
Yu was arrested by deputies on July 1 and released the next day, records show. No more information was provided by the department.
“It is a private matter that has been running through the judicial process,” Yu said.
“I’m privileged to be an American with my constitutionally protected right to due process,” he continued. “At this time, I request the respect of peace and privacy for all parties involved while letting this process play out.”
Mayor Doug Cirbo and other councilmembers could not be reached for comment.
Yu was elected to represent District 2 on the City Council in 2022 for a four-year term.
Yu grew up in Queens after immigrating to the U.S. from China in the late ’90s, according to his City Council biography. He joined the U.S. Army after the Sept. 11 attacks and later served on various local boards and commissions in Lake Forest.
He has unsuccessfully ran for state Assembly a couple of times.
