Incumbent Laurie Davies jumped out to an early lead in the race for the Assembly District 74 seat in early returns released Tuesday night shortly after polls closed.
Davies faces a challenge from San Clemente City Councilmember Chris Duncan for the second time the Assembly District 74 seat representing residents in Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano and parts of San Diego County. Both will move on to the November election.
Davies, a Republican, served on the City Council in Laguna Niguel for about 10 years before joining the Assembly.
She has been a proponent of, among other things, stopping gun violence, protecting the coastline and engineering the state’s for help managing local rail services, which have been impacted recently by several service interruptions because of landslides.
She has told the Register that she’d like to see more funds going to coastal erosion programs administered by the state Parks and Recreation Department.
“This stretch of railroad is not only critical for transporting goods and services, but many people in Orange County use this option to travel along our coastline for work or quick trips,” she said.
Other budget priorities she identified for the Register’s March Primary Voter Guide include more funding for more enforcement of the Armed and Prohibited Persons System, she said.
“This program helps law enforcement take away illegal firearms from people legally deemed a danger to themselves or others,” she said.
Davies said she’d also like more funding for behavioral health resources and, in doing so, attract more providers to California.
Duncan, a Democrat, said sand replenishment along the coast should be the most important capital improvement project for the district.
He also favors residents choosing their electricity providers to help break up the monopoly that big utility companies have.
