Huntington Beach’s Adventure Playground, where children paddle on rafts, climb wooden forts and slip down mudslides, has reopened for the summer after being closed since 2019.
Since its prolonged closure due to the pandemic and drought restrictions, the playground has been partly renovated. Three forts, changing rooms and the mudslide’s staircase were rebuilt and children can no longer build with hammer and nails.
After closing for its 2019 season, the pandemic induced a two-year hiatus. The city wanted to reopen the playground in 2022 but had to cancel those plans because of California’s drought.
The city couldn’t fill the two-foot lagoon with water, which it topped off with garden hoses. Now that most of the state is no longer in a drought after a wet winter brought heavy rainfall, the playground is open again.
The park charges $4 per child. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is meant for kids ages 5 to 12.
The playground reopened this summer on June 24. Visitors can book tickets online through August 18.
The Adventure Playground is located in Central Park, and the first iteration of it opened in 1974. The city, in 1981, moved the park to the 1.5 acre-sized playground where it has some 10,000 children visit every summer.
