If someone were to ask where is one of the best locations in Orange County to bird watch, one of the last places you probably would think would be a cemetery. But since 1993, Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana has been designated as an arboretum.
With more than 75 species of trees and hundreds of species of birds calling it home, Fairhaven is a great place to explore nature, said Emily Alvarez, who works at the cemetery and often gives tours of its special features. “It’s a special place to observe wildlife in the middle of suburban Orange County.”
A favorite to look for is the western bluebird, which can be seen throughout the park. The Southern California Bluebird Club monitors 16 bluebird boxes that have been placed around the property.
“They are most active in the mornings,” Alvarez advised.
On Saturday, April 8, Alvarez will be hosting a nature walk with naturalist Joel Robinson of “Naturalist for You.” The nature walks are offered monthly and point out the diverse species of birds and other wildlife, as well as some of the notable residents interred at the park.
The two-hour nature walk is offered the second Saturday of each month. To participate, RSVP by contacting Alvarez at [email protected].
