With early vote tallies in, Assemblymember Phillip Chen is leading in the 59th Assembly District contest.
The matchup is only between Chen, a Republican, and Obrand, a Democrat from Tustin. Chen is leading in both Orange and San Bernardino counties, early results indicated Tuesday.

Chen has served in the state Assembly since 2016. A former Walnut Valley Unified School District board member, Chen serves as the vice chair of the Banking and Finance Committee as well as the Insurance Committee.
An attorney, Obrand says he’s represented California school districts during his career, including in federal and state litigation related to special education, employment law and contract disputes.
The district includes a portion of San Bernardino and Orange counties, including Brea, Placentia, Villa Park and Yorba Linda.
As of Feb. 20, according to the latest data from the secretary of state’s office, 39.6% of registered voters in the district are Republicans, 32.9% are Democrats and 21.5% are no party preference.
