State Sen. Janet Nguyen and Cypress Councilmember Frances Marquez kept their respective leads Wednesday in the race for the First District seat on the OC Board of Supervisors, making them the likely pair to face off in the November general election.
With about 66% of the votes, incumbent Supervisor Don Wagner maintained a strong lead in the Third District Supervisor race ahead of Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan.
The OC Registrar of Voters estimates more than 270,000 mailed-in, dropped-off and other ballots remain to be processed in Tuesday’s primary race; updates are posted weekdays at 5 p.m. until counting is completed.
Orange County is guaranteed at least one new supervisor with current First District Supervisor Andrew Do termed out and unable to seek reelection. If no candidate in the field of five District One candidates gets more than 50% of the vote, the top two proceed to a November runoff.
Also on the ballot were Van Tran, who is currently serving as Do’s chief of staff, with 18% of the vote, and Westminster Councilmember Kimberly Ho and business owner Michael Vo, who both had about 6%.
Nguyen was leading Wednesday with about 45% of the votes, while Marquez kept her runner up spot in the race with about 25% of votes. Tuesday night, Nguyen said she remains positive about her campaign.
“I’m here for the people, not the interest of anybody else. It’s about the people of First District and I’m so grateful to have to opportunity to represent them at the Board of Supervisors,” Nguyen said.
Marquez said Tuesday night that she thinks voters she spoke with resonated most with her past experience as a public servant and her commitment to bringing about better transparency and accountability to the board.
“I talked to thousands of voters and people don’t want the vision, they want solutions,” she said. “People are hungry for change and want to see a government that is working for them.”
