After three years, the Brea 8K run-walk is back in person for its 30th year on Sunday, Feb. 26, and again will be presented by the Brea Mall.
And the race goes on, rain or shine.
The USATF-certified 5.1-mile course will start on Birch Street, by the Brea Mall, and traverse around the flat and hilly streets, mainly in the east side of town, and then will head back to the mall and the finish line, where there will be free food and beverage samples for participants, complements of popular sponsoring restaurants and supermarkets. And most importantly, there will be the presentation of trophies.
“There has been up to 3,200 race participants in the past and we expect 2,500 this year,” Irene McCallister, Brea 8K committee president, said.
Net proceeds from the 8K benefit Brea-Olinda High School students. This year it will benefit the Global IT Academy, academic scholars, the color guard and the high school’s instrumental and vocal music programs.
McCallister, who has been involved with the Brea 8K Committee for 12 years, said the event attracts all levels of runners and walkers, including competitive racers and families or friends running or walking in groups, but not with dogs this year.
Because of insurance changes, McCallister said dogs are no longer allowed. But they can be with you alongside the route, cheering the racers on.
What is allowed is strollers, and since the Moms’ Club is planning on participating, she said, several racers pushing strollers are expected.
