Cal State Fullerton, Anaheim schools and Mater Dei High canceled in-person classes for Monday, Aug. 21 because of storm-related safety concerns, but many other schools plan on business as usual.
For instance, Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College will be open.
When what became Tropical Storm Hilary was moving toward California last week, Cal State Fullerton initially said it would be open for its first day of in-person instruction. That changed Sunday night.
“In an abundance of caution and with the safety of our students, faculty, and staff as our top priority, Cal State Fullerton will cancel in-person classes and activities, but online classes will continue as planned on Monday, Aug. 21,” the university said in an early-evening update.
AUHSD made its announcement Sunday night as well.
“As the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and school community remain our top priority, we have made the difficult decision to close school sites in the Anaheim Union High School District on Monday,” the district announced on social media.
The Anaheim Elementary School District also opted to close its schools Monday.
“Our schools will reopen on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, and operate with our regular schedules,” AESD said on social media.
Mater Dei High made the same call earlier in the day.
The South Orange County Community College District, which includes Irvine Valley and Saddleback colleges, sent out a note Sunday saying it had decided the worst of the storm conditions would be past Monday and there was minimal impact on its campuses.
Colleges and local school districts, of course, could make decisions through the night, so families should check on individual closures.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
