Whether looking out the kitchen window at a hummingbird or watching a pelican fly by at the beach, anyone can be an amateur birder.
Feathered friends are everywhere and the staff at OC Parks leads monthly walks to help people find them.
On a recent morning in Santiago Oaks Regional Park, a group gathered for a two-hour stroll, looking and listening for birds, and just relaxing.
“Being out in nature is always a wonderful thing to do,” said Judy Bright, a volunteer with OC Parks and the leader for the morning. “It’s so good for your mind and your body.”
The group didn’t venture far from the park’s nature center, stopping frequently just to be quiet and look around.
Woodpeckers and red tailed hawks, California scrub jay and parrots were either seen or heard.
In total, more than 15 species were recorded along with turtles, bugs and butterflies.
“There’s so much beauty out here in nature,” Bright added.
OC Parks offers many interpretive programs, including the bird watching on the third Wednesday of each month at either Santiago Oaks, Irvine Regional Park or Peter’s Canyon Regional Park.
