ANAHEIM – Los Alamitos junior running back Anthony League established himself as one of the better running backs in Orange County football on Friday by rushing for 314 yards and six touchdowns in the Griffins’ 62-25 win over Western in the season opener for both at Western High.
League, a 6-foot, 200-pound junior who has offers from Colorado, San Diego State and others, carried 14 times and scored on runs of 3, 32, 60, 25 yards and 14 yards and went 30 yards to finish a hook-and-ladder touchdown pass. He showed plenty of potential last season when he was Los Alamitos’ No. 2 running back.
Western senior quarterback Anthony Luna passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns.
Western scored on its first possession to take a 7-0 lead. On fourth down and 7 at Western’s 43-yard line, Luna fired a pass to his right to Joshua Faulkner, who made the catch at the Los Alamitos 35, twisted away from the defender and ran to the end zone.
A failed fourth-down conversion by Western put Los Alamitos at its 36. Runs of 34 and 12 yards by League led to League’s 3-yard touchdown run. The kick failed, keeping Western ahead 7-6.
After another failed fourth-down conversion try by the Pioneers gave possession to the Griffins at the Western 36 early in the second quarter, quarterback Alonzo Esparza threw a short sideline pass to his right to Carson Clark, who quickly lateraled to his right to the streaking League who ran uncontested the final 30 yards of a 36-yard scoring play. League’s run for two points put Los Alamitos on top 14-7.
Western closed in with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Luna to Faulkner. The kick was off target, keeping Los Alamitos ahead 14-13.
The Griffins pulled away from there.
After that Western touchdown the Griffins’ Foster Slaughter returned a short kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.
