It might seem a tad too chilly this week in Orange County for conditions to be called “baseball weather.”
It is, though, much better than last week. Or the week before.
Cypress flew home Sunday, Feb. 26 after playing in a tournament in Arizona. Cypress has one of the finer fields in Southern California, but it was unworkable for practice Monday, so the Centurions worked out at an indoor facility. Tuesday was an accreditation day that Cypress coach John Weber had to attend so there was no practice that day and field conditions Wednesday forced the team for more indoors activity.
“So we’re indoors to hit,” Weber said, “and then we go outside to the parking lot to play catch, the first time since Saturday our guys even played catch. But, hey, we make no excuses, win lose or draw.”
Cypress split two games with national No. 1 JSerra last week. JSerra won the first of the pair on nonleague games 7-4 and Cypress was victorious 6-3 in the second game.
Both games were played at JSerra, which has artificial turf covering its entire baseball field. It drains well, too. Serra coach Brett Kay has offered teams the use of his school’s field, as he has also done in previous years.
“Brett’s a soldier,” Weber said. “He’s one of the good guys in this sport.”
NOTES
Cypress’ top competitor in the Empire League usually is Pacifica and that likely will be so this season. The Mariners, 5-2 coming into this week, is led by Chad Gurnea, the team’s best pitcher and a top hitter who signed with Cal State Fullerton as a catcher.
Coach Mike Caira’s team has a fine No. 2 pitcher, senior right-hander Logan Brady, with senior center fielder Ryan Anema batting leadoff and junior third baseman Aidan Marquez hitting in the middle of the order. …
