Rapid and major development is being seen throughout San Pedro, known for its mega port and low-key vibe compared to higher-profile coastal cities in Los Angeles County.
Key among the changes to what was once a little fishing village by the sea will be the opening of a new waterfront development, West Harbor.
That and other changes prompted the port to undertake a study with SWA Group, Inc., which worked on Redondo Beach’s King Harbor, to look at how to improve transportation connections and better tie in the emerging attractions expected to bring a more regional visitor base to the town.
The long-awaited draft plan focused on San Pedro’s waterfront and downtown areas will be presented to the Los Angeles harbor commission at its 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, meeting.
The plan will also be the subject of an upcoming community meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Harbor Administration Building, 425 S. Palos Verdes St., in San Pedro.
The lengthy document, with about 400 pages, outlines how to better link downtown San Pedro, surrounding neighborhoods and the larger region to the LA Waterfront and other attractions. Among the focuses are how best to create and improve transportation, mobility, public art and open spaces.
The public will be able to offer feedback on the proposed plan at both meetings.

- Park once, stay all day stategies focusing on roadways and parking.
- Improve public transit.
- Provide multiple means to get around, including bikes, trolleys and water taxis.
- Create points of interest, including open spaces, recreational boating and public art.
The plan includes pilot programs for mixed-use paths (to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists) and bike lanes that can be adapted to more protected lanes or tried out temporarily in some areas.
Other ideas included are using different bus stop configurations, creating shade structures and canopy trees, installing pedestrian signs pointing folks to transit connections…
