Federal funding to bolster port safety has been designated for both the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
The Long Beach port will receive $4.3 million, while its Los Angeles neighbor will receive $2 million.
U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Long Beach, announced the POLB award in a Tuesday, July 25, news release.
“Ports are the economic engine of our community and our country,” Garcia, Long Beach’s former mayor, said in the news release “As mayor, I saw the threats we face and the importance of federal assistance. This funding will protect our community and our economy, and I will continue to go to bat for our unique needs.”
The funding is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s fiscal year 2023 preparedness grant allocations.
In March, Garcia called on the United States House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security to provide the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Port Security Grant Program $112 million, an increase from the previous $100 million funding level from FY 2023.
“I’ve been fighting for increased federal resources for our community since my first day in Congress,” Garcia said, “including this critical Port Security funding.”
