LAKE BALBOA — Two people were killed early Wednesday morning in a high-speed two-vehicle collision in Lake Balboa that police said was caused by a motorist who went through a red light at an intersection.

The crash was reported about 3:45 a.m. at Balboa and Victory boulevards, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A woman in her mid-20s died at the scene, the LAPD reported. Her name was not immediately released.

According to police, the fatally injured woman was driving a Honda Accord eastbound on Victory Boulevard. A Chevrolet Corvette traveling northbound on Balboa Boulevard went through a red light and collided with the Honda, police said.

The Chevrolet driver, who also was not immediately identified, died at a hospital.

The force of the collision left the Honda crushed and on its roof. The Corvette was sheared in half as it careened into a strip mall, partially toppling a sign on the corner before coming to rest in the parking lot.

KCAL9 reported from the scene that police believe the Corvette may have been traveling at speeds approaching 100 mph when the crash occurred.
