These ships may not be able to sail the seven seas — but they looked fun to build.
The Los Angeles Maritime Museum, in San Pedro, hosted its annual Lego Shipbuilding Contest of Saturday, April 15, with crowds of children and their parents enjoying the colorful and creative day.
Youngsters sorted and plucked their preferred bricks from piles of Legos provided by the museum, which is on the Port of LA waterfront. The competitors then fit the little multicolored plastic pieces together to build ships — in hopes of winning a prize.
The contest, which began in 2017, challenges would-be builders of all ages to create interesting ships to compete for prizes in several age categories: 3-5 years, 6-8 years, 9-13 years and 14 and older. There’s really no age limit, and moms and dads have been known to try their hand at the projects as well.
The contest was held in person in 2017, 2018 and 2019 before being canceled in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. It returned virtually in 2021 and was then nixed last year because of construction of the adjacent town square project.
This year, all ships had to be created on-site using the museum’s building blocks.
The ships will be on display at the museum, at Berth 84 at the foot of Sixth Street and Harbor Boulevard.
Museum hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
